if you want to get a machine, you should get the insurance first. the following link will give some alternatives for a free blood sugar machine and other benefits from diabetics supply.
also you may compare your test results with the normal one to keep your blood sugar monitored.

Are you in the UK? I’ve had several free meters over the years from the hospital. You need to be seeing a hospital specialist anyway, GP and parctice nurse are not usually well-enough informed about diabetes. Get a referral to the hospital, and ask the diabetes nurse for a meter.
Also, do you read Balance (Diabetes UK magazine)? There are frequently ads in Balance where you fill in a coupon and the pharmaceutical companies will send you free meters. I had one from Abbott Diagnostics and they regularly give me free upgrades.
Or try these:

Or in the USA:

It may be worth contacting companies like Bayer, Abbott Diagnostics, accu Chek, etc. Explain the situation and ask nicely whether there’s any chance you can have a free meter. They are obviously not unwilling to give them away, I’ve never paid for a meter in my life and I’ve had loads of them.

If you have insurance they should pay for it. Alot of pharmacies and websites offer that option. Also, at this website: (ps, these are super cute! not like all the bulky ugly meters!)

Check with your local Pharmacies. Many manufacturers offer a rebate which covers the entire price of the unit. By doing this they know that you will be a regular customer for the test-strips that their machine require.
If you are retired and have medicare or medicaid insurance, it would be covered if you brought a prescription.
